The resumption of work at Vietnam's auto parts factories will help Japanese automakers recover from a situation where they are struggling with Covid-19 supply shortages.

Japan's Furukawa Electric's three factories producing automotive wiring harnesses in Vietnam are expected to resume full production soon.

Keiichi Kobayashi, president of Furukawa Electric, said that the factory floor "has been restored to a position where it can respond to customer requests."

The fourth wave of Covid-19 forced most southern companies to operate under restricted conditions, but since October, the utilization rate of all three factories in Ho Chi Minh City and Ben Tre province has been steadily recovering.

Last year, Vietnam was the source of about 40% of Japan's wire harness imports, and pandemic restrictions forced Toyota Motor and seven other Japanese automakers to halve their September output compared to the same period last year.

Yazaki and Sumitomo Electric Industries have also resumed production at their Vietnam factories, which may further help support the production recovery of the Japanese auto industry.
